Structural design and structural planning for Wegberg

Structures for Wegberg, calculated cleanly and documented for checking

From the first question at the kitchen table to the drawings the shell contractor builds from. We calculate new buildings, extensions and alterations in Wegberg and the villages along the Schwalm.

01Your project

What owners in Wegberg come to us with

Almost every enquiry falls into one of three cases. The effort differs a great deal, the first piece of advice costs nothing in all three.

  1. New build on a plot

A detached, semi detached or apartment building on an open plot. The design exists, the structural calculation for the building application does not. We calculate foundations, walls, floors and roof and supply the construction drawings with them.

New build: verification for permit and construction
  2. Extension and added storey

A house from the seventies gains a conservatory, a dormer or another floor. What counts here is what the existing structure can still carry. We settle that on site before anything is calculated.

    Existing: survey first, calculation second
  3. Wall opening and lintel

A wall is to come out, the kitchen is to open into the living room. That is a structural change too. We tell you whether the wall carries load, which beam has to go in and how it is propped.

Opening: often settled within a few days

02Services

Services

Planning and advice in construction, for private and public clients, in residential and commercial work, for new buildings as much as for older ones and alterations.

NoteThe scope is put in writing beforehand. You commission exactly what you need rather than the whole range of services.

Service What it involves Result
Structural design Structural calculation of plane and spatial structures, from a single verification to a complete set for the building application. Stress analysis by the finite element method wherever the component calls for it. Checkable structural calculation
Structural planning The design of the structure before anything is calculated: where the loads belong, which method of construction fits, what can be built slender and still last. Most of the later cost is decided here. Position plan and load path
Reinforcement drawings Formwork and reinforcement drawings that can be read on site. Reinforced concrete, masonry, steel and timber, each in the method that suits the project. Formwork and reinforcement drawings
Building physics Thermal protection and energy advice alongside the structure. The two interlock: an insulation layer that moves later also changes bearings and connections. Thermal protection certificate
Construction planning Construction planning, tendering and bills of quantities. That is what makes offers from shell contractors comparable, because they finally contain the same scope. Bill of quantities
Site supervision Supervision on site: execution according to plan, acceptance of the trades, documentation of the construction phase. Where work is defective, site management sees that it is put right. Site diary and acceptance

03Documents

What you hold in your hands at the end

A structural calculation is not a report that disappears into a folder. It is a set of documents that the building authority, the checking engineer and the shell contractor all have to work from. So here is what you receive.

Visualisation of a two storey house with light brick facade and a shallow hipped roof
FigureVisualisation from the planning stage, not a finished building

NoteDrawings go out digitally and, on request, folded on paper as well, because not everybody on site carries a tablet.

Document What it is for Format
Structural calculation The calculation itself, built up position by position, ready for checking, with every assumption set out openly. It goes to the building authority with the application and, where required, to the checking engineer. PDF and paper
Position plan The overview drawing that ties every position to a place in the building. Without it nobody reads a structural calculation in reasonable time. A3 or A2
Formwork drawings Dimensions, position and levels of the concrete components. The drawing the shell contractor builds the formwork from, before any steel reaches the site. DWG and PDF
Reinforcement drawings Position, diameter and number of bars, together with the bar schedule for ordering. What is right here does not have to be argued about on site. DWG and PDF
Certificates Thermal protection, fire protection and further certificates as far as your project requires them. They come from the same hand and therefore do not contradict each other. PDF and paper

04Components

Components and what matters about them

A house does not carry as a whole, it carries component by component. These decide the effort and the cost on almost every project.

Foundations
Strip footing, raft or pile is decided by the ground, not by preference. On the sandy soils of the Schwalm lowland the answer often differs from the one on a slope.
Ground before design
Ground slab
Load bearing or merely load distributing, with or without sealing against pressing water. The difference costs little when it is decided early and a great deal when it surfaces once the concrete is down.
Plan the sealing early
Walls
Masonry or reinforced concrete, load bearing or bracing. Large window areas towards the garden move the bracing to other places in the floor plan.
Bracing in the plan
Floors
In situ concrete, precast or timber joists. Span, build up height and later use all hang together, and a screed with underfloor heating weighs in too.
Span and build up
Roof
Rafter roof, purlin roof or a structure that keeps the roof space clear. Anyone who may convert the attic later decides that better now than in ten years.
Reserve for conversion
Lintels and beams
Above every opening sits a component that redirects the load. Steel, reinforced concrete or precast, the choice follows the span and the space left above the opening.
Bearing and connection

05Existing

Work on existing buildings, even without complete records

A great deal in Wegberg is older than any digital building file. Anyone changing something on a house from 1968 rarely has more than a few copies and the memory of the previous owner.

The engineering eye for a sensible and economical structure is what makes the difference.
  • Survey and opening of components on site instead of assumptions on paper
  • Assessment of the existing structure and the reserves it still holds
  • Reconstruction of missing data from the method of construction and the year built
  • A proposal that suits the existing structure rather than working against it

06The office

The office

Willi Matern M.Sc. Bauunternehmung is an engineering office in Heinsberg that calculates and builds. Having both under one roof changes the structural design: it does not only have to be correct, it has to be buildable.

Good buildings come out of the cooperation between client, architect, structural engineer and the contractors. We sit in two of those seats at once, which is why we know fairly precisely what causes trouble on site.

What counts is experience not only in new build but also in alteration and modernisation, especially when no records of the existing building survive, or only incomplete ones.

Besides houses we work on demanding buildings and special structures. For steel structures that runs from the design through the checkable calculation to detailing fit for assembly.

  • Thorough advice on structural design and building physics
  • Careful planning of the structural concept
  • Close support of the building sites
  • Quick response to changes during construction

07Process

From the first call to approval

Five steps, in this order. At every point you know what happens next and whose turn it is.

NoteIf the scope changes along the way, we say so before we carry on calculating. There are no unannounced additions here.

Step What it involves Who acts
Enquiry and first conversation You describe the project, we say what is needed for it and roughly what that means. It costs nothing and rarely takes longer than a phone call. You and us
Site visit and documents For existing buildings we come and take measurements. For a new build, design drawings, the soil report and the state of the building application are enough. Us on site
Offer with a fixed scope You receive in writing which documents we deliver and what they cost. Only after that do we start calculating. Us in writing
Calculation and drawings Structural concept, calculation, position, formwork and reinforcement drawings. Queries are settled directly with your architect. Us and your architect
Checking and site The documents go to the building authority and, where required, to the checking engineer. After that we stay reachable, because something almost always changes on site. Authority and checking engineer

09Area

Wegberg and the places around it

Wegberg sits at the edge of the Heinsberg district, with sixteen villages between the Schwalm and the motorway. Between Rickelrath, Beeck and Wildenrath the distances are short, and short distances are half the effort of a site visit.

Towns and villages we cover

  • Wegberg
  • Beeck
  • Rickelrath
  • Klinkum
  • Merbeck
  • Wildenrath
  • Arsbeck
  • Dalheim-Rödgen
  • Uevekoven
  • Rath-Anhoven
  • Tüschenbroich
  • Erkelenz
  • Wassenberg
  • Hückelhoven
  • Schwalmtal
  • Niederkrüchten

Beyond the places listed a call is still worth it. For larger projects we travel further, and for a single lintel we will tell you honestly whether the journey pays for you.

NoteOur office is in Heinsberg. Wegberg is about twenty kilometres away, so a site visit can usually be combined with a second one.

10Questions

Frequent questions

What owners in Wegberg most often want to know before they get in touch.

Do I really need a structural engineer for a wall opening?

As soon as the wall carries load or braces the house, yes. You cannot tell that from a plastered wall. Call and describe the position and the year of construction, and the question can often be narrowed down on the phone.

What does a structural calculation for a house cost?

That depends on size, construction and scope, so we do not quote a figure here that would be wrong for your house. You receive a written offer with a fixed scope before anything starts.

How long does it take until the documents are ready?

That depends on scope and workload. We commit to a date in the offer and let you know if anything changes. A single lintel is settled considerably faster than a complete structural calculation.

What do you need from me to get started?

For a new build: design drawings, plot details and the soil report if there is one. For an existing building: whatever old drawings you have, and an appointment on site. We fill the gaps by surveying.

Do you work with my architect?

Yes, that is the normal case. We coordinate directly so that you do not have to mediate between two offices. If you are building without an architect, that works too.

Do you carry out the shell construction as well?

Yes. The office does not only plan and calculate, it also builds: masonry, reinforced concrete and earthworks. You can commission both or only the structural design.
